Before you complete the application form, please check our website for information about our dormitories and rental prices. After we receive your application, you will receive an e-mail from us every four weeks in which you must confirm your further interest within seven days.
Yes. You can also apply in advance. You will have to present your notice of enrolment or student ID card upon signing the contract at the latest.

First get in touch with your contact person at your university and ask whether a room has been reserved for you. If not, then you can apply to us.
The type of accommodation cannot be changed. Changes can only be made to the move-in date and the upper rent limit. If you would like to apply for a different dormitory, you will have to submit a new application. Your old application will be cancelled.
No, the rooms are only allocated by our housing service.
When deciding on the allocation of available accommodation, race, ethnic origin, gender, religion or ideology, disability, age or sexual identity of the applicant are not taken into consideration. In the case of shared apartments, mixed-gender occupancy is possible.
We have a number of "barrier-free" rooms. If you need a room with special facilities, please contact our accommodation service directly.
We offer special accommodation for single parents and couples with child(ren), married couples, in family flats in our dormitory "Karlshof" residence.
We are not able to organise viewings with interested tenants as our rooms and flats are always occupied. You can find detailed descriptions and pictures of the dormitories on our website. You can visit the dorm on your own initiative by ringing the doorbell and asking the students living there for a quick tour.
Usually the rooms or flats are furnished as follows:
Bed, wardrobe, desk, shelf and chair. Fridges and cooking facilities are available in the kitchens.
The following items are not part of the basic equipment and must be brought along: Pots, crockery, bed linen, small electrical appliances such as: Microwave, kettle, coffee machine etc.
Our student residences have an Internet connection. You will receive information about the Internet connection when you move in or in the download area.
The approximate monthly rent for a room is €395.00.
The total rent is made up of the basic rent and the running costs. The basic rent varies according to the size of the room, the facilities in the dormitories and the type of accommodation. The running costs mainly includes water, heating, waste disposal and in many dorms, electricity (see our website).
The broadcasting fee is not included in the rent.
The use of the washing machine and tumble dryer in our laundry rooms must be paid for separately (cashless) on site.
You can rent a car/motorbike parking space, if available. You will need to make a separate contract with us.
Your application and all personal data will be deleted. You will have to reapply if you are still interested.
Yes. The security deposit is three basic rents.
Moving in
No, that will be not possible.
You sign the tenancy agreement on the day you move in at the accommodation service in your dormitory. To sign the tenancy agreement, you will need the contract documents sent in advance, as well as a valid identity card and your current student ID.
Your keys will be handed over to you by accommodation service when you move in.
Usually, you must be present in person in order to move in. In exceptional cases, a third party can also move in with a power of attorney and a copy of your ID.
Please bring all necessary bed linen (pillows, duvets and covers). You may need pots, crockery, cutlery, kettle etc. for the kitchen.
Basically no. It is only permitted in a few exceptions. Please talk to us in advance.
All our rooms and flats are furnished and items that belong to the Studierendenwerk Darmstadt may not be removed from the room.
No. Keeping animals is generally not permitted in our halls of residence.
Yes, you must register or re-register with the city registration office at the city centre no later than two weeks after moving in. You will receive the necessary from our accommodation service when you sign the tenancy agreement.
Anyone who has registered Darmstadt not as their first but as their second residence must pay 15 per cent of the annual rent price (excluding heating) to the city of Darmstadt. Details can be obtained from the "Einwohnermeldeamt".
Yes, as a tenant of our dormitories you are also responsible for registering with the ARD, ZDF and Deutschlandradio contribution service. You can find information on this at: https://www.rundfunkbeitrag.de/
Most of our dormitories ave arking spaces for cars and bicycles.
In the student residence
The period of stay is limited to a maximum of 4 years (eight semesters). The tenancy agreement can only be extended by one semester in cases of extreme hardship.

The period of stay in another dormitories of the Studierendenwerk is counted towards the maximum period of stay.
The minimum rental period is one semester
The term of each tenancy agreement is limited to a period of 24 months and can be extended by a further 24 months.
The rent is paid by SEPA direct debit (direct debit authorisation) on the 6th of each month.
The room can be sublet with the consent of Studierendenwerk Darmstadt. You can find more information on the page "Subletting"

Yes, all our dormitories have a laundry room.
Relocations are only possible on written application in justified exceptional cases. An administrative fee of €100 is charged for moving.
You can cancel your tenancy agreement directly in the office of your accommodation service. If you are not in Darmstadt, please send your cancellation in writing and signed to the Studierendenwerk by post. Please check the cancellation periods in your tenancy agreement.
Cancellation by e-mail is not formally correct and cannot be accepted.
Damage to or defects in the accommodation (e.g. in the room, kitchen or bathroom) must be reported immediately to the Accommodation Service so that any further major damage can be prevented.
The emergency regulations can be found on the notice board in your dormitory.
If there are any problems with your internet access, please contact the network tutor in your dormitory.

Moving out
After receiving our confirmation of cancellation, please arrange a pre-acceptance and move-out date with accomodation service in your dormitory in good time.
The deposit will be refunded 3 months after the end of the contract to the account you have named. A proper handover protocol is required for payment of the deposit.
Moving out dates are coordinated with the accommodation service in your dormitory. The keys to your room must be returned on the last day of the contract at the latest (Monday-Thursday between 9.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. or Friday between 9.00 a.m. and 3.00 p.m.). If the last day is a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, the keys must be returned on the preceding working day. (General Tenancy Conditions, Item XV).
A preliminary appointment should be arranged with your accommodation service before moving out.
When you return the keys, your room will be checked for damage and cleanliness and a handover checklist will be drawn up. All keys must be returned. It is not possible to return to the room after you have moved out and returned your keys.
The room handover should always be carried out in person. If you are unable to attend, you can send a person of trust in exceptional cases. This person must then present a power of attorney signed by you and a copy of your ID.
