Movie “Expedition Depression”

Movie „Expedition Depression“

A theme evening about depression (in German)

It is estimated that one quarter of all people between the ages of 18 and 25 are affected by depression or anxiety disorders. Students are particularly affected by this development. In the past two years, the situation has worsened. In addition to the pressure to perform at university, the corona pandemic has been another factor that has had a significant impact on the lives of German students, resulting in isolation and loneliness, reduced motivation and hopelessness in the face of persistent pressure and stress. Students` demand for psychological counselling has recently increased enormously.

Together with the Self-Help Office Darmstadt, we would like to draw your attention to the subject of depression and invite you to a film evening on 12 November 2024. During the evening, there is the opportunity to exchange ideas with ither sufferers about the disease, to benefit from the experiences of others and to get know our offers of help.

Summary movie

Five young adults are on a road trip across Germany. As different as they may be, they all share one common theme: they have experienced depression as children or adolescents and have had to learn to accept it as part of their lives. On their journey together, they want to find out more about the disease, how to treat it and how to deal with it. In doing so, they are also addressing the question: What can help other adolescents and young adults cope with depression?

Michaela Kirst (director and producerand Axel Schmidt (filmmaker and specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy) set out wiht them. Together with the Deutsche DepressionsLiga e.V. (funded by the AOK - die Gesundheitskasse), an impressive and moving documentary has been produced that provides information about this serious illness.

„Expedition Depression“ not only provides answers - thanks to the openness of its five protagonists, it gives it a face and sends three important messages: depression can affect anyone, depression is treatable, and: "You're not alone."
